Attack of the Blue Monster

Golf balls are much more expensive than some would think, which is why golfers get so angry when they lose one in the woods or water.  This week at the newly-redesigned Trump Doral, a fair amount of balls were lost in the water… 318 in all, a new record.  The total from this week broke the previous record by 98, showing why Doral is appropriately named the Blue Monster.

So how much did all of those lost ball cost?  Assuming that the average price for a dozen tour-level golf balls is about $45, each one is valued at about $3.75.  Multiply that price by 318 golf balls and you have your total: $1,192.50.  Nearly $1,200 in golf balls fell victim to the Blue Monster… simply astonishing.

The tournament fielded 69 of the best golfers on the planet, all attempting to tame the newly renovated course.  Unfortunately, it appears the Blue Monster won, simply based on the fact that only three players finished the tournament under-par.  Possibly even more surprising is that an average of 4.6 golf balls per player were lost throughout the week.

Tournament champion Patrick Reed took home a cool $1.53 million in winnings, making lost golf balls the least of his worries.  It was clear he was trying not to add to the record on his final hole Sunday, hitting irons all the way home to close out with a bogey and the victory.

Sam Snowdon, founder of Golf Ball Hogs, estimated that he’s found about 80 million golf balls at the bottom of golf course ponds over his 10 years of diving.  With regards to the 318 balls lost at Doral this week, he said “those balls probably don’t make it 'til dark.  As soon as the patrons leave, the grounds crew goes diving.”

Diving for those "white gold" isn’t a bad idea, especially since people have “paid college tuition” just from finding lost balls in those pesky ponds.
