Lindsey Vonn’s Golf Game Coming Along Nicely

Lindsey Vonn hasn’t been doing a ton of skiing since missing the Winter Olympics in Sochi this past February, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been busy. Vonn has traded her skis for golf clubs and is trying to get her game up to snuff with the help of her boyfriend: Tiger Woods.

“A little golf post workout. I did a frame by frame with my @gopro but I need more practice until I can show u that good thing I have an amazing teacher! #workingonit #harderthanitlooks #sunset”

As Vonn said, it certainly doesn’t hurt that she has “an amazing teacher.” Obviously, she’s talking about Woods, arguably the greatest golfer of all time. Her swing looks pretty good, and perhaps it’s only a matter of time before she’s teeing it up in a pro-am with him? Whether she’s watching him warm up, taking a lesson or even holding the camera while Tiger gives Ahamd Rashad a lesson, she and Woods spend a fair bit of time at the range together.

Who knows? Maybe Vonn just enjoys hitting the range? But I have to say, a Woods-Vonn pairing at, say, next year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am would definitely be must-see TV.

Rory McIlroy, Nike Promote #DontSleepOnSummer Campaign

Now that the celebrating has died down following his win at the Open Championship, Rory McIlroy is back to the grind, getting his game into shape for the slew of big events on the horizon. The three-time major champion teamed up with Nike to promote its #DontSleepOnSummer campaign and gave folks a behind-the-scenes look at his life on one of the many days we don’t see him on the course:

[7:50AM // 1 of 6] You don’t get to the top by taking it easy. We’re following @rorymcilroyofficial for a full day to see what #DontSleepOnSummer really means. At Rory’s house in West Palm Beach, it means a lot of reps before he even steps foot on the course.

[9:30AM // 2 of 6] Man’s best friend. This time of year, Rory rarely leaves the house without his bag in tow. #DontSleepOnSummer

[10:20AM // 3 of 6] Make history a habit.@rorymcilroyofficial doesn’t waste any time getting back to the range after big wins. #DontSleepOnSummer

[11:55AM // 4 of 6] Whoever said speed kills never met consistency. @rorymcilroyofficial hits from the same spot in practice every day at his home course. #DontSleepOnSummer

[2:20PM // 5 of 6] Rory takes a timeout from regular practice to test out our latest irons. #mmproto

[4:00PM // 6 of 6] Who needs the back nine when you have your backyard? Nobody told @rorymcilroyofficialthat he had to be at the course to work on his short game. #DontSleepOnSummer

In the next eight weeks, McIlroy will play in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship, FedExCup Playoffs and the Ryder Cup. After that, summer will be over for most of America and the northern states will slowly fall into the bitter clutches of Old Man Winter.

Until then, it looks like the Summer of Rory will continue as long as he keeps grinding when the cameras aren’t on.

Bernhard Langer enjoyed one heck of a career on the PGA and European Tours, winning 45 times, including two Masters. Once he joined the Champions Tour, Langer became the dominant player almost immediately and hasn’t stopped. With his 13-stroke drumming at the Senior Open Championship this past week, the now-56-year-old Langer has four senior major championships — including two of the last three. The win was the 22nd of Langer’s Champions Tour career.

Every golfer dreams of one but few ever actually get it: the hole-in-one. ESPN’s Jay Harris can now count himself among those few who’ve hit the perfect golf shot. More than that, Harris knows what it’s like to have your ace score you a brand-new car.

During a charity golf tournament hosted by former New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson, Harris made his ace and won a Range Rover:

Normally reserved for PGA Tour pros, winning a car for a hole-in-one has to be an absurd, surreal feeling. In the pictures, it seems like Harris handled it like he’d been there before. Good for him. I know I’d have been crawling all over the car like Rich Beem.

Auburn Honors Fallen Football Star with Golf Outing

Philip Lutzenkirchen anchor

Former Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen died last month in a car accident in Georgia, and was honored by Auburn alum Jason Dufner last week at the Open Championship. The Duf Daddy played with a patch on his golf bag commemorating his friend.

This week, the memory of Lutz was at the forefront of another golf event. Prior to the 50th anniversary banquet on Thursday night for the Auburn chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the FCA and Auburn University Club hosted an 18-hole golf outing in honor of Lutz at the Auburn University Golf Club. Proceeds from the event, which featured 60-70 golfers, will benefit the Auburn FCA, an organization Lutzenkirchen had been involved with since high school. Read More

Bill Murray Witnessed History at Yankee Stadium

Bill Murray Witnessed History at Yankee Stadium

No night was more indicative of Reggie Jackson’s clutch ability than Oct. 18, 1977: Game 6 of the ’77 World Series. The New York Yankees outfielder slugged three home runs on three consecutive pitches, each from a different pitcher. That led to an 8-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and clinched the 21st World Series title for the Yankees.

Among the 56,407 fans that evening was a 27-year-old Bill Murray, who said he had “terrible, terrible” seats. But he witnessed one of the greatest athletic feats of all-time, and briefly recounted that story to the audience at his annual Caddyshack Charity Golf Tournament, where he shared the stage with Mr. October himself. Read More

Out Of Bounds

Last Friday, Jimmy Fallon found himself a little behind on personal errands, so he took some time during his show to write up a few “thank you” cards he’d been meaning to do. Unfortunately for Jimmy, hit didn’t get through too many of them thanks to a persistent, nagging disembodied voice:
